Feng Shui questions, answered plainly
Where the schools disagree, we say so, rather than picking one and presenting it as the answer.
What is Feng Shui, in one sentence?
Feng Shui (風水, literally 'wind-water') is a Chinese tradition of arranging space in relation to the flow of qi, an energy concept in Chinese cosmology. It is not one fixed method — it split into distinct schools over centuries, and they genuinely disagree on technique.
Is Feng Shui the same as interior design?
No, though they overlap in practice. Interior design is a Western discipline concerned with function, aesthetics and ergonomics. Feng Shui, in its classical forms, is a cosmological and directional system with its own texts, compass tools and schools. Some of what gets sold as 'Feng Shui' online is really just décor advice with the name attached.
What's the difference between Form School and Compass School?
Form School (巒頭) reads the landscape and physical shape around a building — hills, water, the shape of a room — and predates the compass methods. Compass School, including Flying Star (玄空飛星), uses precise directional calculation, often with a Luopan compass, tied to the building's construction date and orientation. In classical practice, the two are often combined rather than treated as rivals, but they emphasise different evidence.
What is Black Hat Feng Shui, and is it 'real' Feng Shui?
Black Hat Sect Tantric Buddhist (BTB) Feng Shui is a modern lineage, popularised in the West from the 1970s onward, that replaces compass direction with the position of the front door to orient its Bagua map. Practitioners of classical Compass and Form schools generally regard BTB as a distinct, Westernised branch rather than a continuation of the older compass tradition — this is a genuinely contested point, not a settled one, and we present it as contested rather than resolving it for the reader.
What is the Bagua map?
The Bagua (八卦, 'eight trigrams') is an octagonal map of eight life areas plus a centre, drawn from the I Ching's eight trigrams. Classical Compass practitioners fix it to compass direction; BTB practice fixes it to the front door instead. Because the two methods can assign different areas of the same room to different life categories, which version is being used matters more than most articles online admit.
What are the Five Elements in Feng Shui?
Wu Xing (五行) — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — is a Chinese cosmological cycle describing how forces generate and control one another, applied across Chinese medicine, astrology and Feng Shui alike. In Feng Shui it's used to reason about material, colour and shape, not simply assigned as a 'favourite colour' per element, which is a common oversimplification.
Does Feng Shui bring wealth, health or luck?
That is a traditional belief within the practice, held by many practitioners and clients, and it is not something this site can verify or promise. We present it as a traditional claim, attributed to the tradition that holds it, rather than as an established fact — no arrangement described on this site is claimed to produce a specific life outcome.
Why do clutter and Feng Shui get talked about together?
Partly tradition — classical texts treat blocked or stagnant qi as a real concern, tied to clutter and poor airflow — and partly plain psychology, since a cluttered room measurably affects mood and attention in ways researchers in environmental psychology have studied independently of Feng Shui. The two explanations are compatible but are not the same claim, and we keep them labelled separately.
Do I need a compass (Luopan) to practise Feng Shui?
Only if you're working within the Compass or Flying Star schools, where precise directional reading is central to the method. Form School and BTB practice don't require one in the same way. A basic smartphone compass app is accurate enough for a beginner's orientation exercise; a traditional Luopan is a specialised instrument classical practitioners train with over years.
Is there scientific evidence for Feng Shui?
Some individual components — daylight orientation, airflow, decluttering, avoiding a bed directly in a high-traffic sightline — overlap with findings in environmental psychology and architecture that stand independently of Feng Shui. The cosmological claims about qi, direction and the Five Elements sit outside what conventional science tests, and this site does not claim they are scientifically established.
Can Feng Shui fix a relationship or health problem?
No arrangement on this site is presented as capable of that, and we'd be misrepresenting the subject to imply otherwise. Some traditional teaching frames certain placements as supportive of relationship or health areas of the Bagua — that is a traditional belief, stated as such, not a claim this site is making on its own authority.
What's the honest starting point if I'm skeptical but curious?
Read the history first, then the Five Elements, then the schools-compared guide — in that order you'll see where the ideas came from before you meet the specific rules, which makes it much easier to tell classical technique apart from modern marketing.
